Always fun and centering when I’m back on Hawk Hill.
I evolved a lot as a person during my time here and some of my earliest lessons in emotional intelligence happened here. When I come back, whether it’s for a talk, a fundraising event, or anything, I’m immediately humbled and at peace, remembering all the “becoming” that happened here over 4 years. I’m forever grateful and it’s why I give back whenever I can, beyond the dollar contribution.
I learned that the school’s Center for Professional Development was hosting a conference on EI back in February. I reached out to their staff and asked how I could be involved. Turned out, a speaker canceled and they asked me to send over some thoughts on a workshop topic. I was thrilled that they liked what they read, felt I was a good fit, and trusted me with the content.
In all my years of presenting workshops at conferences, and preparing material, I can honestly say that I haven’t poured my heart and soul into a presentation and handouts the way I did with this one. I wrote a script with the love and devotion I wrote papers there 17-20 years ago. I was/am proud of the work. I walked into the room this Wednesday and had a flashback to a class there in 1998 and a very early lesson in EI. Despite some nerves, I knew this was the right space and I was supported. I am grateful for the experience and for the folks who showed up to my workshop with the desire to be there and listen.
The conference was a wonderful experience, the content terrific, and I loved how so many of the points each speaker made were echoed by others. None of us knew each other or prepared as a group and yet, typical to SJU, there was a comprehensive thread that ran through the day and the content.
I’m looking forward to sharing more of what I learned there and also putting more of my lessons and teachings into the world.
